The Disciplinary Committee of FIFA has initiated a procedure against the Argentine Football Association (AFA), as well as against several of its players and the Spaniard Gavi, following the incidents that occurred at the end of the 2026 World Cup final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (United States).
According to the organization, based on the report of the appointed ethics instructor, a disciplinary procedure has been initiated against the Argentine players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, and Thiago Almada and the member of the Albiceleste national team’s technical staff Roberto Fabián Ayala. Likewise, also against the Spanish footballer Pablo Martín Páez Gavira ‘Gavi’.
In the case of the AFA, the committee is investigating possible breaches of article 13, such as “using a sporting event to make statements of a nature other than sporting,” article 14, for “inappropriate conduct,” article 15, for “discrimination and racist aggression,” and article 17, regarding the order and security of matches.
In the case of the latter, for “discriminatory chants and gestures, delays in the start of matches, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators, and the throwing of objects by spectators in several matches of the Argentine national team.”
Regarding its players and technical staff, a disciplinary procedure is opened against the footballers Nahuel Molina, for two charges of aggression, one consummated and one attempted, and another for unsportsmanlike conduct, and against Leandro Paredes, with three charges of aggression, and Thiago Almada, for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Also against the assistant coach Lionel Scaloni, the former footballer Roberto Fabián Ayala, in his case for a charge of aggression.
On Spain’s side, the midfielder Gavi is being investigated for a case of unsportsmanlike conduct.
The accused will now have the opportunity to present their position, after which the FIFA Disciplinary Committee will issue a resolution later.
EFE already reported on July 20 that FIFA would open a disciplinary investigation to analyze the incidents that occurred after the World Cup final after appointing an instructor to investigate the events that took place.
