The Civil Guard has arrested one of the daughters of the couple formed by the former secretary of the Union of Farmers and Ranchers of Aragon (UAGA), Javier Sánchez, and Esther Latorre, who were murdered last Friday in Tauste (Zaragoza), and her current partner as alleged perpetrators of the double homicide, according to sources from the armed institute.
The lifeless bodies of Javier Sánchez Ansó (born in 1959) and Esther Latorre (1960) were found by the sister and brother-in-law of the woman early on Saturday night inside their home. It is a single-family home located on Ronda Val de Volví, near Sancho Abarca Avenue in Tauste, a town of about 6,800 inhabitants.
As reported by Efe on Sunday, the bodies were found in different rooms, with stab wounds, and on that day the hypothesis of gender-based violence was ruled out. The Civil Guard’s investigation concluded with the arrest, this Monday, of one of the daughters of the couple and her current partner, a man of Colombian origin, as alleged perpetrators of the double homicide.
The Civil Guard continues the investigation to reconstruct the events and for this purpose the agents are focused on the visual inspection of the home where the couple was found and on gathering evidence to clarify what happened. The detainees will be brought before the Court of First Instance of Ejea de los Caballeros.
Javier Sánchez Ansó is a leader of agrarian unionism in Aragon. A member of UAGA (Union of Farmers and Ranchers of Aragon) since 1983, he became the general secretary of the organization in 1999 and held the position until 2010. Recently, he served as the head of UAGA in his region, the Cinco Villas.
As highlighted by the current general secretary of UAGA, José María Alcubierre, in conversation with EL MUNDO, Javier Sánchez defended throughout his career “family farming” and, as Head of International Relations of Coag (Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Ranchers), “he brought the problems of farmers from all over the world to Brussels”.
His partner, Esther Latorre, who was also a farmer and had a small laying hen farm, was also part of UAGA. “She has always been very present in the organization, especially defending equality among farmers and farming, fighting for women’s rights in the sector,” Alcubierre recalled.
Both were also members of Izquierda Unida and were considered very well-known and loved people in Tauste. This afternoon they are being farewelled by their family and friends in a secular ceremony at the Casa de la Cultura of the town at 7:00 p.m. The Tauste City Council has explained that the bodies of Sánchez and Latorre are at the town’s funeral home. The council decreed three days of official mourning on Sunday for the death of the couple, for which one of their two daughters and her partner were arrested this Monday.
