The Government of Italy has decided to extend for 15 more days the suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain and the controls at ports and airports on travelers coming from the Iberian country, the Italian Ministry of the Interior reported this Monday.

“The decision was made, in line with the analysis carried out by the Immigration and Border Security Analysis Committee, because the evaluation elements that had motivated its reintroduction on August 1 persist,” the Ministry of the Interior said in a statement.
The Government led by Giorgia Meloni has submitted to the European Union the memorandum informing about this extension and has also communicated its decision to the Spanish Executive.
“The evaluations justifying the extension were communicated by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, during a constructive phone conversation,” the official note explains.

Exactly one month ago, on July 31, the Italian Government announced its decision to suspend the European free movement agreement with Spain due to a matter of “national security” amid the Ceuta migration crisis.
The suspension has meant the reintroduction of border controls at ports and airports for travelers coming from Spain.
For its part, Pedro Sánchez’s Government unsuccessfully demanded Rome lift these restrictions and responded by suspending Schengen with Italy until September 7, also applying controls to travelers coming from that country.
