“We have been informed of the kidnapping of a Western citizen, specifically a Spanish one, this Friday, September 4. According to the explanation, the security forces are already mobilized to “gather the necessary information” and work on the release of the hostage.

So far, no data has been released about the identity of the Spanish citizen, the circumstances in which the kidnapping occurred, or the place where he was captured. No official information about the case has been disseminated either.

The kidnapping occurs in a context of growing insecurity in Burkina Faso, which has faced for more than a decade a wave of attacks carried out by armed groups, especially in different regions of the country.

The last case of special relevance related to Spanish citizens dates back to April 26, 2021, when Spanish journalists David Beriain and Roberto Fraile, along with Irish journalist Rory Young, were killed in an armed attack in the east of the country.
