Vox “understands and shares” that the Italian Government, led by Giorgia Meloni, applies border controls to travelers arriving from Spain. It considers it “responsible” that the transalpine country adopts this decision in response to the irregular entry of 72,000 in Ceuta that occurred on July 30: “Its purpose is to protect the Italian border against the possible entry of illegal immigrants,” considers the Vox MEP Jorge Buxadé about the measure.
However, that the Spanish Government has responded to that closure of the Schengen area reciprocally, also applying border controls to travelers arriving from Italy, seems to Buxadé to be a “decision by [Pedro] Sánchez to protect himself and provoke an international conflict.” “There is a big difference,” he has defended regarding the measures imposed by both countries, even though Moncloa justified the decision with an argument very similar to that presented by Meloni’s cabinet: “In the face of the persistent irregular migratory pressure suffered by the transalpine country.”
Vox thus balances to maintain its firm support for Meloni, the party’s preferred partner in Europe, even though the decision adopted by her government hinders the process that travelers flying from Spain to Italy must follow until, at least, next August 15. “We have learned that in the first border controls people without documentation who intended to enter Italy have been detected,” Buxadé has argued, convinced that there are immigrants who arrived in Ceuta who intend to move from there to Europe – although without showing proof of this, in any case -.
In fact, in the opinion of the MEP, the imposition of border controls that Meloni has now introduced would have been justified even much earlier. “Spain is putting the Schengen system at risk,” Buxadé stated in an interview on ‘Antena 3’, after pointing out Sánchez’s migration policy and, in particular, the ongoing extraordinary regularization.
On the opposite side, the Vox leader has praised the measures applied by the Italian Government in migration matters. “It is the country that in recent years has done better in immigration control,” Buxadé has defended, backing measures applied by Meloni’s government such as the agreements closed to transfer migrants to centers in Albania – later declared “against the law” – or other pacts sealed with North African countries for the return of irregular migrants.
