If your credibility is exhausted, it is because you are a man whose contradictions are routine. For some time now, therefore, they have been uninteresting. If it is necessary to focus on one of Pedro Sánchez’s most recent betrayals of himself, it is because it affects national security. What is the reason that, within a month, an attack on the nation’s territorial integrity turned into a migration crisis? There lies everything. He was the one who first denounced that the nation had been attacked at the Ceuta border and, although his immediate conclusion was that he deserved a vacation, few more alarming statements can be heard from the voice of a president.
How is it possible that the nature of this crisis has transformed so dramatically? The most revealing part of the report that CENIF has sent to Judge María Tardón is not the images but the tactical complexity of the attack. A plan of truly malevolent perfidy that requires great technical skill. A first wave of grown men, well equipped with neoprene and fins, would have saturated the border’s defense capacity. When border security was overwhelmed, and therefore nullified, the human artillery of cannon fodder began to arrive. Entire desperate families, with women and children, against whom no democratic force would apply coercive violence.
Is it possible that a spontaneous human exodus has that capacity for organization? The reader can conduct an experiment. Take yesterday’s newspaper. Look at the front page. In the photograph of the demonstration in Madrid’s Cibeles square, there are, according to the Government delegation, 50,000 people. I know the authorities make a dishonest calculation of protests, but this time the sinner will bear the penalty. Add another 20,000 people to that crowd. Now imagine, reader, that all those people appearing in the front-page photo of your newspaper, plus 20,000 more, mobilize toward the border to enter another country illegally. Consider whether such a mass movement could go unnoticed. The experiment has a drawback: surely the person doing it will increasingly feel uncomfortable being treated like an idiot. Because they are being told the opposite.
We have been saying for some time that the only way to prosper in this late sanchism is to pretend to be a fool, and that is a servitude that no free citizen has to assume. This would be the reason why the streets of Spanish cities filled this week in a huge demonstration.
At least 72 mayors of the 2308 municipalities governed by Spaniards decided to march with their citizens. Only one socialist minister remained seated in her seat barely applauding the president’s speech. It is not a very abundant harvest of self-esteem among socialists, but something is something.
