The Minister of Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, conveyed this Saturday to the society of Ceuta a message of solidarity and self-criticism and acknowledged that the Government has “a part of responsibility” in the situation of “extraordinary overflow” experienced by the autonomous city after the entry of thousands of migrants last July.
In an interview on Radio 5, Rego referred to the criticisms received by the Executive for the management of the situation in Ceuta and defended the need to “make self-criticism” and “take responsibility” for the mistakes made.
“It is true that we have a part of responsibility, obviously. It is true that there was a situation of extraordinary overflow and coordination should have been more efficient or faster,” admitted the minister, who said she had witnessed situations “that obviously we do not like”.
Rego defended that the Government must focus its efforts on “repairing, resolving, and attending to the citizens of Ceuta,” but also to the people who are “in a situation of vulnerability” and who, from a humanitarian point of view, need attention.

“Both things can be done at the same time,” the minister maintained, referring to the need to attend both the Ceutan population and the migrants, against the “ultra” right-wing discourses, which she criticized during the interview.
“I want to convey to the population of Ceuta all my solidarity and also the self-criticism, which is important,” concluded Rego, before highlighting that the State has approved numerous resources to face the situation. “Ceuta is a very important place for this Government”, she emphasized, while assuring that the Executive will continue working in the autonomous city in coordination with its authorities.
With these words, Rego joins the stance of the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, who had already publicly assumed part of the Government’s responsibility for managing the crisis in Ceuta and had also called for self-criticism regarding the situation experienced in the autonomous city.
