Dogs weighing up to 40 kilos will be able to travel with their owners, both on Renfe’s commercial services (AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed and Intercity) and on Public Service services (Avant and Media Distancia), from next July 21, coinciding with the celebration of World Dog Day.
Until now, this service was only available on some AVE trains and railway corridors (since 2022 on the Madrid-Zaragoza-Barcelona and Madrid-Málaga corridors, and subsequently on Madrid-Valencia, Madrid-Alicante and Madrid-Granada).
In this way, Renfe becomes the only operator that allows travel with dogs up to 40 kg on all trains, seeking to contribute to a more “inclusive mobility adapted to new ways of traveling”, as stated in a press release, in which it defends that it has consolidated “as one of the most advanced European railway companies for traveling with pets”.
In addition to being able to travel with large pets on all routes, this new model also offers the possibility of accessing the train from any intermediate stop and not just at the beginning of the journey.
Two dogs weighing up to 40 kg can travel on each train, located in the ‘pet friendly’ carriage, at a cost of 40 euros on AVE, Alvia, Intercity, Euromed and Avlo. Dogs under one year old, if they are of a potentially dangerous breed, or if they are females in heat, are excluded from these trips.

Requirements
Dogs will occupy the interior seat next to the window, next to their owners, who must keep them on a non-extendable leash of 1.5 meters and with a muzzle on both at the station and at the time of boarding and disembarking the train.
The owner must travel with the official documentation in order: updated vaccination record or the European pet passport, as well as with a cleaning kit (pee pad, wipes, bags, disinfectant and anti-odor spray).
At the access control for Commercial Services trains (AVE, Alvia, Avlo, Euromed, Intercity), as well as Public Service Avant, owners will be given a travel kit consisting of a seat cover and a mat for the dog, which the owner must place on the seat and remove when their journey ends.
