The Pope is a Real Madrid fan. Leo XIV is already in Spain to begin his apostolic journey, a visit that will take him through Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. However, one of the big headlines of the day stopped being strictly related to religion during the plane trip: in his usual chat with the press on board, he was asked the most common question in our country: Real Madrid or Barcelona?
“The Pope is for all teams, but Prevost is a Real Madrid fan,” Leo XIV affirmed with a laugh.
Florentino Pérez, who was at the same time closing his candidacy for the presidency of Real Madrid, echoed this and wanted to greet the Pontiff: “We welcome Pope Leo XIV, who on his way to our city said on the plane that he is a Real Madrid fan.”
After this relaxed footballing nod, the Supreme Pontiff landed at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas airport, where he was received on the runway by King and Queen Felipe VI and Letizia, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and a large representation of political and religious authorities.
Bad Bunny, on everyone’s lips
Madrid is debating between two major events this weekend: Bad Bunny’s concerts at the Metropolitano and the Pope’s visit. In this regard, the pontiff ironized about the arduous competition for young audiences in the coming days:
“Do you want to see Bad Bunny or do you want to see the Pope? Many will go to see Bad Bunny, but I think there will also be a few here to see the Pope.”
Despite the coincidence with the musical phenomenon of the year (Bad Bunny had not visited Spain for seven years), attendance forecasts for religious events remain very high. About 70,000 faithful will be present at the Bernabéu Stadium and about 12,000 people at the Movistar Arena, all in addition to the hundreds of thousands who will be in the streets of the capital.
