Five people have been detained and several have been injured on the morning of this Sunday after a collision between a drug smuggling boat and a Civil Guard patrol boat on the coast of Adra (Almería).

Sources from the investigation have confirmed the collision and specified that the operation has so far resulted in five detainees. These same sources indicate that at least two injured people had to be evacuated to the Poniente University Hospital, located in the Almerian municipality of El Ejido.
On the other hand, other sources close to the case raise the number of injured to three among the arrested and point out that one of them is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The Almería Civil Guard Command has confirmed that the collision between both vessels occurred, although they have not provided additional details regarding the condition of the injured or the detainees.
The incident has prompted a swift reaction from the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC). Its spokesperson in Almería, Víctor Vega Romero, regretted the incident, recalling that the collision took place in the “same place where a colleague from the Customs Surveillance Service died”.
“There are too many tragic events that we are experiencing in the Alboran Sea,” said Vega Romero, who recalled similar episodes such as the one that occurred in the Jiloca River a few months ago or the one a few days ago in Murcia, where a colleague was seriously injured and saved his life “by a miracle”.
The spokesperson for the professional association emphasized that officers cannot live “by a miracle”, but need “resources both legislative, as well as equipment, and personnel”. In this regard, he demanded that the province be classified as a Zone of Special Singularity and that measures be applied to encourage the retention of officers to address the migration and drug trafficking crisis.
Vega Romero warned that there is an “escalation of violence” in the area due to the entry of cocaine and the establishment of “mafias from the East and South America”. A situation that, he warned, could lead to the use of “war weapons” such as rocket launchers.
