Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has required the wife of the Prime Minister, Begoña Gómez, to “prove” within a non-extendable period of five days that she traveled to London for her daughter’s graduation, the only trip authorized by the Justice, since the passport “does not show any exit or entry procedure”.
This is stated by the magistrate in an order issued this Monday, with which he seeks to know if Gómez has used her passport “for the specific purpose for which the precautionary measure was lifted” and if any act has been “carried out that could constitute a crime of breach of precautionary measure”.
However, sources from the defense of the Prime Minister’s wife, Pedro Sánchez, argue that there is no certification of the mentioned trip in the document since modern systems are electronic: a device that scans the passport and the traveler’s face and allows or denies passage.
The decision to authorize Begoña Gómez’s trip fell to magistrate Antonio Veijo, Peinado’s substitute during his vacation. The judge accepted Gómez’s request considering two elements, which he briefly outlined: the “nature of the event” and “the good judicial cooperation relationship between Spain and the United Kingdom, even after Brexit”.
