The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, appealed this Monday for the signing of a great agreement against the climate emergency in front of Juanma Moreno Bonilla, recently sworn in and re-elected as Andalusian president thanks to an agreement signed with Vox. “The climate emergency kills,” he emphasized.
After last year, a third of all the burned area in Europe occurred in Spain, the president wanted to highlight the importance of prevention and educating the youngest, in educational centers, so that they know how to react to this type of emergency.
Sánchez stated this during his visit this Monday to the Consortium for Fire Extinction and Rescue of the Levante Almeriense, where the command and coordination center is located to face the deadly fire that, since last Thursday, has ravaged the Almerian municipality of Los Gallardos.
In an institutional statement, the President of the Government wished a speedy recovery to all those injured in this fire, expressed condolences to all the families of the victims, and highlighted the work of the State – the different mayors, the General State Administration, the Almería Provincial Council, and the Andalusian Government – in their fight against the fire.
Furthermore, Sánchez reflected on the need to “raise awareness” about the increasingly serious consequences of climate change and that “everyone,” institutions and civil society, must “do their part” to be able to sign this great agreement.
The president emphasized the unity of all institutions and recalled that, from the Government of Spain, “all the State resources that have been required” have been made available, both in the extinction phase, in the investigation of the causes, and in the reconstruction.
Regarding the victims, many of foreign origin, Pedro Sánchez deeply regretted their deaths and mentioned the sadness of the mayors, present during the statement, as they are all well-known people to everyone and perfectly integrated into the life of the municipalities.
Operational Situation 0
Just before his speech, the President of the Andalusian Government, Juanma Moreno Bonilla, also thanked the work of all administrations that, from the beginning, have worked “networked” and “in line” to control and stabilize this fire and informed that, from this Monday, the Andalusian Government has moved to “Operational Situation 0”.
“We are convinced that we can consider this fire controlled – not extinguished, although this is the previous step – and therefore, all the efforts of these days are bearing fruit,” he explained.
Moreno Bonilla again highlighted the cruelty and speed of this fire, aspects that, he says, will be investigated and that have “caught their attention”.
Additionally, the popular baron also warned Andalusians that a “very complex and very difficult” summer is expected regarding fires, since in the current summer period, three times more surface has already burned than last year.
This means that, despite a year that has been “especially rainy,” low forests and shrubs have grown. This fact, combined with heat waves, is “the indispensable fuel for an immediate spread of the flames.”
“Here climate change is affecting in a very, very important way and we are seeing it in a climatic disorder with situations that are very unknown, very exceptional, and increasingly explosive,” he detailed.
Therefore, the Andalusian president has asked citizens to remain alert to possible smoke, suspicious behavior in the forest, and to the warnings of experts and institutions that are working on these emergencies.
