The Government tries to shield Pedro Sánchez from the PSOE’s “plumber”. The Minister of the Presidency and Justice, Félix Bolaños, defended the integrity of the Prime Minister this Friday, ruled out that the leader of the Executive had knowledge of Leire Díez’s activity, and even assured that he is forceful against the corruption cases piling up around him and his party.
“It is undeniable that there is a person who continuously uses the name of the Prime Minister and probably does so to give herself importance. But the summary itself answers that question because there is nothing, absolutely nothing, to indicate that the Prime Minister had any knowledge of this,” Bolaños pointed out from Luxembourg, where he is participating in the meeting of EU Justice Ministers.
“And he has no knowledge of this,” he continued, “because the President is a person of integrity, a person who, when he becomes aware of the slightest irregularity, puts his foot down and very forcefully expels from the party, expels from any responsibility, the people who may have indicatively committed some irregularity.”
Bolaños’ defense and arguments completely clash with what the Central Operative Unit (UCO) maintains. According to this Civil Guard body, the Prime Minister was aware of the “plumber’s” activity. “What would be evidenced by the content of the previous messages is the knowledge on the part of the Prime Minister of the activity she was carrying out,” it states.
Bolaños, however, insisted on the “clarity” of the summary. “It establishes that there is nothing, absolutely nothing to indicate, to lead, to make us think that the president had any knowledge of a person who, it is true, probably used his name to give herself importance,” he insisted again, trying to discredit Díez.
He followed the same line in an interview he gave to Cope this morning. “Use” of Sánchez’s name; “there is nothing to prove” that the Prime Minister knew about the “plumber’s” activities; and “integrity.”
The head of Justice, and one of the ministers closest to Sánchez, also downplayed the hundred PSOE militants who are demanding an extraordinary council and that Sánchez step aside. “A meeting of 100 people in a party, in which I believe we are now around 150,000 militants, well, it has the importance it has,” he said.
