The U.S. State Department issued a message of condemnation, solidarity, and warning this Friday regarding what has happened in Ceuta and Melilla in the last 36 hours. An ambiguous statement with what seems like a veiled threat, but without exactly defining to whom and how.
“The United States stands with the people of Spain, and all Europeans, against this blatant violation of their sovereignty and human rights”, begins the tweet from the department led by Marco Rubio. The first sign in that direction following the previous day’s criticisms from the White House or the Department of Homeland Security. Immediately after, however, the tone changes completely. “This unacceptable incident is the direct result of the Spanish Government’s deliberate efforts to facilitate and promote mass illegal migration to Europe. We are considering actions to protect Americans at home and abroad from this threat, and we are ready to assist other European allies who consider similar options,” the post concludes.
There are many ideas in a few lines. On one hand, the acknowledgment that for Washington what was seen is a violation of Spanish sovereignty, but without any condemnation of Morocco, its King, or its Government, which Marco Rubio praised yesterday and described as a great ally and “guarantor of stability in the region.” On the other hand, the condemnation once again of the Spanish Government and the left in general, assuming that the arrival of tens of thousands of people is the direct fault of Spanish migration policies, which go in the opposite direction to what Trump has defended for a decade, and not of Rabat’s actions.
But the most cryptic part is the final one, in which the United States says it “is considering actions” to protect Americans “at home and abroad” and is prepared to help “other allies who consider similar options.”

The White House had already criticized Moncloa on Thursday. “President Trump has long warned Europe about what would happen if they continue implementing far-left and globalist policies, including those that facilitate mass migration. Spain and other countries that have adopted this destructive philosophy should reverse course immediately or risk their own disappearance,” said a spokesperson for the U.S. government.
Likewise, the Department of Homeland Security commented on a video with images from Ceuta saying that “if Spain had its own President Trump, this would not be a problem. The citizens of Spain should take that into consideration.” And today, Vice President JD Vance, reacting to another video, expressed a similar view. “Thank God Donald Trump was elected and our country’s border no longer looks like this. These images from Spain are an unfortunate reminder of the consequences of mass migration and the radical left’s globalist policies that have allowed the Invasion of the West,” he declared on his social media.
