«P.S.». These are the initials that appear up to four times in a personal diary that the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard seized from Leire Díez, the PSOE’s fixer. Never before had these initials appeared in writing within the framework of the case investigating alleged maneuvers carried out to deactivate judicial cases affecting the socialists, the Government, and the family of Pedro Sánchez. The most notable of these notes refers to a “meeting with P.S.”, although Moncloa was quick yesterday to deny that it could refer to a meeting between Díez and the President of the Government.
The annotation, like many other mentions that appear in the diary, appears decontextualized: it does not explain who the other interlocutor meeting with “P.S.” would be, nor are there any further details in that same note to prove that the initials refer to Pedro Sánchez. But in the notebook, a 2025 diary, there are three other allusions to “P.S.” that more clearly suggest that Díez could be using these initials to refer to data she was noting about the head of the Executive.
«Inquiries about Ábalos. Copy, pen, chain of custody, inquiries into Ábalos and P.S. databases». This is another of the mentions that appears in the notebook, providing a bit more context. This is recorded several pages before the reference to the “meeting with P.S.”, which appears on the February 3, 2025 page after an allusion to Rubén Villalba, the Civil Guard commander investigated in the Koldo case, and is followed by a note with the date “19/2/2025”. Díez also uses the initials “P.S.” when, in the first pages of the diary, she writes: “When Joseph lands at Prisa, he reaches an agreement with P.S. The editorial line is set by P.S. and the strategy by Joseph” – it is understood that she is alluding to Joseph Oughourlian, president of Grupo Prisa since 2021 –. In that diary, the former socialist militant also includes phrases such as “UCO has all the WhatsApp messages between the president and Ábalos” or “Pedro doesn’t trust the DAO”, which reflect that she was addressing information about the head of the Executive in her personal diary.
She also did so in her conversations with other people. In a message Díez wrote to another investigated person, she said that, “by order of the one,” Santos Cerdán had conveyed that the objective was to achieve the annulment of judicial cases linked to the hydrocarbon sector and the Koldo case. “The reference to ‘the one’ is considered to only be attributable to the President of the Government and the party’s general secretary,” concluded the UCO.
«The president has never known, endorsed, or been informed of Díez’s actions, which he would never have tolerated,» government sources stated yesterday, on the contrary, after the content of Díez’s diary and the mention of “P.S.” became known, quickly dissociating Sánchez from the noted meeting with someone bearing those initials. The President of the Government himself had denied hours earlier having any knowledge of the movements directed by Díez and Cerdán to deactivate the corruption investigations surrounding the socialists.
Furthermore, the Minister of Justice, Félix Bolaños, also argued yesterday that it proves nothing that the PSOE’s fixer used the president’s name in her conversations within the framework of the plot. «It is undeniable that there is a person who continuously uses the name of the President of the Government and probably does so to give herself importance. But the summary itself answers that question because there is nothing, absolutely nothing, to indicate that the President of the Government had any knowledge of this,» said Bolaños. However, until yesterday, only references Díez made to “the one” with other interlocutors had appeared, but not her personal notes about “the president” or “P.S.”. In any case, for now, there is no record that the PSOE has filed a complaint against the fixer.
«BALAS, DANGEROUS»
The diary seized from Díez includes references to numerous political figures, judges, and investigators. This is the case of Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Balas, head of the UCO’s Economic Investigation Department. “Antonio Balas, dangerous,” wrote the former socialist militant. Balas, as head of this unit, was one of the plot’s targets, as can be deduced from an audio between Díez and an implicated agent in which she inquired about information regarding the colonel. “What is [Balas’] ideological affiliation?” she asked. Regarding the alleged intention of the plot to deactivate investigations into the PSOE and government’s circle, Díez’s diary also contains another relevant note: “DGP [can be understood as a reference to the General Directorate of Police] will investigate the UCO.”
