The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, has proposed “considering” having a “special legislation” that is less rigid to address massive entries of immigrants when, as in the recent case of Ceuta, the problem affects the “territorial integrity” or “national security” of Spain and it is not just mere arrivals.
The reflection of the socialist baron opens a political debate about the possibility of having laws that can facilitate reacting to so-called hybrid attacks or destabilization operations by other countries, so that there is a quicker response when expelling those immigrants who have been used for that purpose.
In an interview on Espejo Público, on Antena 3, Page outlined some ideas because right now we are “very imprisoned by immigration and political asylum legislation.” He did not say it explicitly, but it is understood that it is due to the procedures and times required, such as conducting an individualized study of each case before returns.
“Could we consider special legislation when it comes to matters of sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national security?” he asked. “Could we consider legislation that does not have to be followed scrupulously?” he continued.
This would imply “defining a space” in which, when it is considered that an “attack on Spain’s security” has occurred, it would be possible to proceed in a “different” way than under current legislation, so as not to be “prisoners” of its rigidity. He did not specify further, neither about minors nor about asylum. He only raised that reflection.
Asked about the Government’s management in Ceuta, the president of Castilla-La Mancha was blunt in describing it as “a disaster before, during, and it still is today.” “A disaster in approach, focus, and management,” he concluded.
More specifically about Morocco and the blame, and without denying that the Government must be “more meticulous” when defining its accusations, Page demanded not to deceive ourselves about what happened. “No self-deception,” he said.
