The events occurred around 1:30 p.m. when the aggressor, 49 years old, burst armed into the barracks where his ex-partner, 50, was on duty. “An incident occurred consisting of an armed attack by a member of the Corps against another. Both victim and perpetrator are ex-partners,” the Civil Guard reported in a statement. “As a result, the victim, a Civil Guard assigned to the Llanes Company, died,” the note added.

Several officers tried to help the victim and prevent the aggressor from fleeing. In the exchange of gunfire, the aggressor and another Civil Guard colleague of the deceased were injured. “The perpetrator, while fleeing, fired at other personnel who were in the official premises, who repelled the attack, resulting in the perpetrator being seriously injured,” the Benemérita reported around 3:30 p.m.

Minutes later, the Efe agency reported the death of the perpetrator. The death occurred while he was receiving medical assistance in a mobile ICU.

The deceased officer, on duty, was in the process of divorcing the alleged aggressor, with whom she had several children in common. According to sources from the investigation explained to Efe, the Civil Guard was in the VioGén system due to reports of abuse. Victim and aggressor were parents of an 18-year-old young man and 14-year-old twins.

Regarding the other officer who was hit by a shot while trying to help his colleague, it has been revealed that he holds the rank of lieutenant and has been seriously wounded by a bullet in a leg.

A neighbor near the barracks told the media at her doorstep that several wives of the officers who were outside the barracks when the events happened took refuge in her house. “I heard many screams and the wives of the Civil Guards, who are my friends, came up here to be with me because they were crying inconsolably,” she said.

At that moment, the women did not know what had happened: “They knew nothing. Only that they were not allowed to enter the house. They stayed here a long time until later one of the sons of one of them came for her and they all went there with him,” the neighbor, named Rosalía, recounted, who was later told “that a Civil Guard had killed the woman, that he had come and shot her.”

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence has already announced that it is investigating this as a case of gender-based violence. If confirmed, there would be 34 women victims of gender violence so far this year, 1,375 since 2003.

A team from the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard has traveled to Llanes to take charge of the investigations.

The Unified Association of Civil Guards has lamented the tragedy that occurred at the barracks and has expressed “all its support and affection” to the family and friends of the victim.
