Businessman and former senior public official Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros passed away this Saturday at the age of 82. Espinosa de los Monteros, former president of Iberia and father of the former Vox leader Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, developed much of his career in public administration and the corporate sector, where he worked on Spain’s international projection.

From Atenea, a think tank chaired by his son, they have confirmed the death. They highlight Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros as an “exemplary figure whose career, professionalism, and commitment leave an indelible mark.”
Espinosa de los Monteros graduated in Law from the Complutense University and in Business Administration from ICADE. Between 2012 and 2018, he was appointed by the Council of Ministers as the first High Commissioner of the Government for the Spain Brand, a position from which he led the strategy to coordinate and enhance the country’s external reputation and image.

He was also Spain’s commercial counselor in Chicago and commercial director and vice president of the National Industry Institute. In the business field, he presided over Iberia and Aviaco, Mercedes Benz Spain, Daimler-Chrysler, and González-Byass. He also chaired the Business Circle and the automotive employers’ association ANFAC, and was part of the governing bodies of companies such as Inditex, Acciona, and Schindler.
The former secretary general of Vox Javier Ortega Smith has lamented the death of Espinosa de los Monteros, whom he described as “a great father, a great person, a patriot, and an extraordinary professional.” “We will pray for him, although I am sure he is already in heaven,” he added on the social network X, where Iván Espinosa de los Monteros responded with a “thank you very much, dear Javier.”
