At least 13 dead as a small plane carrying tourists crashes in southern Peru

At least 13 people died after the crash of a small plane carrying tourists to observe the ancient Nasca Lines, one of the archaeological attractions of Peru, the police reported on Saturday.

The aircraft accident occurred after 1:00 p.m. (Peruvian local time), after departing from the airport of the city of Pisco, about 240 kilometers south of the capital Lima.

“We have information that there are 11 passengers and two crew members who have died”, said police major Jorge Andrade to the press from the accident site.

“Due to the magnitude of the accident, there are no survivors. So far we have recovered four bodies,” Andrade said without specifying the identity of the deceased.

He also did not provide details on the causes of the incident and said that the Civil Aviation Authority will investigate the crash.

At the site, firefighters and police work among the twisted wreckage of the aircraft that still smokes, according to images from correspondents in the area published on Facebook.
